OUGS is a society designed to inspire and motivate the next generation of geologists and Earth Scientists. We do so by holding a series of different professional events throughout the year. These events take the form of careers fairs, conferences, seminars, seasonal dinners, alumni events and more!
We are part of the Oxford Earth Science department and have good connections to experts in nearly all geological fields. Alongside this, the department provides a wonderful way for members to mix with each other creating strong friendships, brilliant inter-year connections and a solid support network to help you through your course at Oxford. We also encourage students to socialise and have fun in a range of social events that also occur throughout the year. Examples include pub crawls, quizzes, open ‘mica’ nights and our infamous termly cocktails evening, famously known as ‘Rocktails’ (a highly sought-after event). We also hold small-scale weekly sporting events, play intersociety competitions and even partake in ‘Geovarsity’, our annual grudge match against our Cambridge Earth Scientist counterparts. Having been in operation for almost as long as the department has existed, the Oxford University Geological Society has developed and expanded considerably over time. However, as was the case when it was first created, the primary aim of OUGS is still to enrich the academic lives of both undergraduate and postgraduate students with a passion for the now extremely broad range of scientific branches that fall under the umbrella term of 'Earth Sciences'. Whether you’re a current student, an incoming student, or just interested in what we do, please feel free to explore our website to find out more about all things OUGS, including how to get involved, upcoming events, news, advice and a variety of resources for you to use throughout your degree. If you have any ideas, questions, want to collaborate or have concerns to share with the Committee at any time, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us through our social media pages (@oxunigeologysociety on instagram) or via email. |
