England is a great destination for a mapping project if you'd prefer to keep costs down and stay a little closer to home, whilst still being able to choose from the wide variety of geology on offer! The climate, rock types and topography can vary quite a lot depending on where you are. One benefit of choosing somewhere in England is that you might already recognise some of the rock types, having seen them during previous field trips around the UK. We have listed a few of the projects people have done in the past below!
Shap, North-East Lake District
Outline of Geology: Lavas and tuffs of Borrowdale volcanic series overlain by Silurian sediments (Limestone and Siltstone). Intrusion of Shap granite causing thermal metamorphism. Overlain unconformably by Carboniferous limestone which is undeformed.
Topographic description: 200 - 400m elevation, moderately hilly terrain. Exposure practically non-existent.
Accommodation: Caravan site cost £10 - 13 per day.
Food: Local shop (6 miles) and supermarket in Penrith (20 miles)
Transport: Used a car for travelling to and within area and also to shops by car.
Weather: Usually a little sunshine everyday , 20 days, but not normally lasting all day, variable wind, sometimes quite high. No snow or Ice. Temperatures 17- 18 C
Total cost: about £525: £85 Travel; £355 Accommodation; £85 Food.
